Season 3 of The Owl House premieres this October

Emperor Belos, who at this point we know to be the colonial-era witch hunter Phillip Wittebane, represents control and conformity — Luz’s external fears. But the Collector, with their childish impulses and deep insecurities, is more of a reflection of Luz’s greatest anxieties. Now that Luz has conquered them, she can extend a hand to the Collector and try to get him to see what he’s doing wrong. She, Eda, and King tell the Collector about their story, which means revisiting familiar haunts and recounting memories.

LGBTQ+ representation

As creator Dana Terrace revealed, it was simply because someone decided that the show did not fit the Disney brand. Whether that is because of the more serialized episodes compared to other Disney animated shows, the fact that it’s about witches and demons, or the fact it features prominent queer characters is unclear. There’s even a time skip epilogue that indulges a lot of fun character moments. But it’s not just pure fan service (even though, some of it kinda is).

The Owl House returns for season 3 this October

(Don’t worry! Killing the main character off in the middle of the finale also isn’t the move in a story fundamentally about finding one’s place and being around people who love you.) But for a good five minutes, it feels like it just might be for real. And the episode gives this Disney Death just enough time to feel impactful, but doesn’t drag it out so it’s a gotcha moment five seconds before the end. Eda and King’s sorrow turns to rage as they lash out at Emperor Belos. Amity and the rest of Luz’s friends are shell-shocked in the moments before they rally. Most heartbreakingly, Luz’s mother Camila — who is still trapped in a frozen puppet form — sheds a tear. The Owl House premiered in early 2020 and followed a misfit human girl named Luz, who found herself in a fantasy realm populated by witches and demons.

The Owl House finale will be available to stream on Disney Plus on April 9. And that just makes Luz’s eventual comeback even more satisfying. It feels earned, especially with the heart-to-heart she has in the “Space In Between” with the original Titan himself. Luz confesses one last anxiety — that she’s no better than Belos in her desire to protect her friends.

Luz's friends are welcomed into her home by her mother, but they seem stuck, as the portal that led them there is now closed. Reaching the Boiling Isles seems impossible at this point, but that certainly doesn't mean they're not going to try. The first two seasons of The Owl House are streaming on Disney Plus.

Showing us that these characters still mean something to each other after time has passed really resonates. This isn’t a story where the found family dissolves after the adventure or bittersweetly grows apart; these bonds are made to last and last they will. The Owl House gave us almost everything that it could’ve in its limited three episode final season — and also gave us a gut-punch in the finale that is going to stick with us for some time. Of course, this is a Disney Channel show, so this death isn’t permanent.

Still, somehow the team behind The Owl House pulled it off, with a very sweet epilogue that sets up a whole playground for fans to run wild in. The Owl House follows Luz, a self-assured teenage girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to a magical world where she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting. Because we’ve seen Luz work out her issues and confront them head on, it’s very evident how both Belos and the Collector represent these trials that once stood in her way.

The Owl House Season 3 has released 2 of three special episodes for the final season of the series. Here is everything to know about past and upcoming release dates. While the teenagers safely made it to the human world, Luz’s mentor, wacky Eda the Owl Lady, and many of the adults were left to the Collector’s mercy. Season 3 of "The Owl House" is a lot shorter than most fans might have hoped for. All current episodes of The Owl House — all of season 1 and the first half of season 2 — are available now on Disney Plus. The exact dates for the premiere of the second half of the season have yet to be announced.

“Watching and Dreaming,” the final episode of The Owl House, doesn’t hold back on the emotional punches. In fact, what really seals the deal is one particularly devastating moment that the show pulls off with particular finesse. It’s a risky, well-worn trope that is somehow treaded perfectly — and with it, the finale takes on a level of poignance that elevates the already great show to new levels. However, fans will likely get new information soon, as the episodes have been airing a few months apart.

Compared to other all-ages animation programming, Disney Channel has lagged behind in terms of LGBTQ representatio, even though its live-action shows, like Andi Mack, have featured prominent queer storylines. But The Owl House broke through previous barriers, making Luz and Amity’s relationship the main romantic focus of the show. Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls and voice of King on The Owl House, tweeted about the sheer difference in trying to get LGBTQ+ representation just a few years ago. Despite fantastic reviews and high viewership, the Disney Channel animated show did not get a full order for season 3, because it “did not fit the brand.” Instead, it was granted three hour-long episodes to wrap up its story.

On Reddit, devout fans unleashed a torrent of love for the show's final installments. Some were understandably sad to see it go, which tinged their appreciation of the excellent final season with sadness. But plenty of other viewers refused to let the show's untimely end touch their joy. Countless threads celebrate Season 3's awesome character designs, pulse-pounding battles, warm-hearted romances, and shocking revelations.

However, after being intercepted and sucked up by a doorway portal, she finds herself in the company of Eda and King, meeting a cast of quirky new friends. "The Owl House" is Terrace's baby; she seems sad to let it go, but hopeful about the future. In time, the friends find a way to reopen the portal — but a certain someone gets in their way. Then, in Episode 2, "For the Future," Luz and her pals face off against The Collector so that they can save the Boiling Isles. Episode 3, "Watching and Dreaming," brings things to a climactic close with an epic battle against Belos.

It’s the last metaphorical hurdle she needs to vault over, one last insecurity to reflect upon, before she can pick herself up again and fight. Currently you are able to watch "The Owl House - Season 3" streaming on Disney Plus or buy it as download on Apple TV, Google Play Movies. Season 3 of "The Owl House" kicks off with Luz, Amity, Hunter, Willow, and Gus getting pulled back into the Human Realm.
